About Split
Split is a historic Mediterranean city with over 1,700 years of continuous urban life, shaped around the Roman Palace of Emperor Diocletian, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the second largest city in Croatia and the cultural and economic centre of Dalmatia, it preserves a remarkable blend of Roman, medieval, and modern layers, creating a living historic core where cultural heritage and everyday life seamlessly coexist among stone streets, historic squares, and landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Domnius.
Situated in the central Adriatic, Split offers an excellent setting for international scientific meetings, combining easy access for participants with unique geographic beauty. With its diverse karst landscapes, spanning from mountains and coast to the surrounding islands, the region provides the perfect backdrop for our symposium.
At the same time, Split offers a vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere with a distinctive lifestyle shaped by its seafront promenade, lively public spaces, rich gastronomy, and relaxed rhythm of daily life. The city’s famous relaxed lifestyle perfectly resonates with the spirit of our symposium; like our beloved lacertids, locals in Split enjoy basking in the sun and enjoying a long cup of coffee on the famous Riva promenade. With this in mind, we look forward to welcoming you, herpetologists, researchers, and lizard enthusiasts from all over Europe and beyond to the sunny shores of Split.
About the venue
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Faculty of Science (PMF), University of Split for the main programme of the symposium from Monday to Friday (7–11 June 2027).
The venue itself carries a proud academic heritage. Its roots trace back to 1945 with the founding of the Higher Pedagogic Academy, the very first public institution of higher education in Dalmatia. After exactly 70 years of rich history operating in the city center, the faculty turned a major page in December 2015 by moving to its brand-new facility within the modern University Campus.
Today, PMF offers spacious, air-conditioned lecture halls to pleasant spaces for poster sessions and coffee breaks. Outside the halls, the campus is full of cafes and green areas ideal for networking, discussions, and soaking up the Dalmatian sun (where, if you look closely, you might spot a lacertids basking nearby). How to get to the venue
By public transport from Split Central Station / Ferry Port
- By bus: Walk to the nearby local bus stops (such as Market/Pazar or Sukoišan) and take local bus line 11, 17, or 18 directly to the University Campus. The ride takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Get off at the “Kampus” stop, from where it is just a short walk to the main entrance of PMF. Link to local bus lines.
- On foot: Alternatively, you may simply walk from the city center; it will take around 30 minutes (ca. 2.5 km uphill).
By public transport from Split Airport (SPU)
- By shuttle bus: Take the direct airport shuttle bus to the Split Central Bus Station (approx. 30–40 minutes). From there, change to local bus lines 11 or 18 to the Campus. This way usually is faster and more convenient than regular local transit.
- By local bus: Alternatively, you can take local bus line 37 from the airport to the Sukoišan terminal, and change there to the Campus bus 11 or 17. Link to local bus lines.
By car
- Use the address above to navigate to PMF. If you are arriving via the A1 highway, take the Dugopolje exit and follow the express road towards Split. Parking spaces are available around the campus, though availability may be limited during morning hours.
By taxi
- A taxi service (such as Uber or Bolt) from Split Central Station takes around 10 minutes and costs around 10–20 €, depending on traffic and the provider. From Split Airport, it takes approx. 30 minutes and costs roughly 30–45 €, depending on traffic and the provider.
